I believe one of the biggest reasons radio talent struggle to compete with other digital creators is because we’re too reserved. Here’s why and some thoughts on how we can all add a little edge to our content to help us compete for clicks.

As you make holiday programming plans, take some notes from Hallmark. They turn their TV channel into a Christmas machine and their audience rewards them with massive viewership, brand loyalty, and cultural relevance.
Because that blinking light on Line 3? It’s not your ex. It’s a fan. A superfan, probably. Maybe even a ratings-carrying, quarter-hour-boosting, diary-filling unicorn. And you’re sending them straight to Nowheresville.
Listen to your talents execute a talk set and time when they start talking.  How long does it take before they express interesting content?  If it’s over 8-seconds, you are losing listeners.

Funny doesn’t land unless the audience already likes you. And that’s the trait nobody talks about enough: Likability. If listeners don ’t like you, jokes won’t land. You’ll sound like that guy who tells a joke at a party and everyone suddenly decides to go refresh their drinks.
PDs make time for the DJs, display a genuine interest, and help them perform better.  Conduct a critique session at least once a week.  Consider these guidelines for analyzing air­checks and offering guidance.
