Your Website Should Be Your Station’s Best Employee

If your website hasn't been updated lately, chances are it's doing exactly what dead air does—sending people somewhere else. Today's website isn't an online brochure. It's your station's 24/7 personality, promotion department, contest machine, streaming hub, podcast library, and sales assistant.

If your website hasn’t been updated lately, chances are it’s doing exactly what dead air does—sending people somewhere else.

Today’s website isn’t an online brochure. It’s your station’s 24/7 personality, promotion department, contest machine, streaming hub, podcast library, and sales assistant. While your DJs are sleeping, your website should still be working.

Here are a few quick ways to make it earn its paycheck:

  • Make it easy to find. Your web address should be short, memorable, and match your station brand. Better yet, remind listeners about it every hour and always give them a reason to visit.
  • Think mobile first. More than half your audience will never see your site on a desktop. If it doesn’t look great and load instantly on a phone, you’re already behind.
  • Keep it fresh. Nothing says “nobody’s home” faster than last month’s contest, departed air personalities, or a Christmas promotion in March. Assign someone to review the site every week.
  • Give listeners a payoff. Exclusive videos, artist interviews, concert photos, local event calendars, blogs, podcasts, recipes, playlists, and contests all give people a reason to return.
  • Make streaming impossible to miss. Your Listen Live button should be the biggest invitation on the page. Don’t make listeners hunt for what they’re already trying to hear.
  • Turn personalities into content creators. Every morning show bit, local story, viral moment, or behind-the-scenes photo can live on your website long after it leaves the air.
  • Help advertisers succeed. Include success stories, sponsorship opportunities, digital advertising options, and easy ways for prospects to contact your sales team.
  • Connect everything. Your website should be the home base that ties together your stream, app, podcasts, social media, contests, and email club.

Remember, listeners don’t compare your website to another radio station—they compare it to Netflix, YouTube, TikTok, Amazon, and every other polished digital experience they use every day. That’s a tough neighborhood.  Your website extends your station’s Stationality beyond the airwaves.

Lund Challenge

Open your station’s website on your phone and give yourself 30 seconds to complete three tasks: find the Listen Live button, enter the latest contest, and locate your morning show. If any of those take more than a few taps, fix them this week. Better yet, hand your phone to someone outside the station and watch what happens.

Lund Lesson: Your transmitter may get listeners in the door. Your website, app, and digital content are what keep them coming back after they leave the car.
