Build Your Personal Brand Safely

Your own jock page on social media is crucial in controlling the type of privacy you want.

As a pretty private person and on-air talent, I can tell you it can be difficult to share personal information AND keep a sense of privacy. Enter: Station Personality Pages.

When I had my kiddos, I was excited to talk about them on-air!

  1. Moms in the listening area could relate to me and my chaotic days with two boys 1.5 years apart.
  2. Listeners got an insight into my daily life and felt closer
  3. It made for easy and great content!

However, the first time a listener came up to me while I was alone with my kids at a park and said hello to them using their names…I was instantly freaked out. This grown woman continued to follow us and talk to me about my children like we’d been friends for years; even though it was clear I was uncomfortable. That day forward, I shut down on air about my kiddos, for their safety. I stopped talking about them so much. I’d mention them now and then, but nowhere near the capacity I did. What’s the alternative to this?

Your own jock page on social media is crucial in controlling the type of privacy you want. I NEVER let a listener become a “friend” on facebook, and I tightened up my Insta and Tik Tok. I took down all the videos that had any semblance of my kids in them and I locked up my Instagram. I created a personality page on Insta and FB. This may seem a little paranoid after one instance of “stalkerism.” However, this wasn’t a one time thing. My mother said someone stopped her in the gym locker room and asked her about me and the kids so it was a fairly common occurrence. To the listener, this is a normal thing! It’s wonderful to have that connection with them! I loved that! To a new mom, it was concerning and something I wanted to mediate before it got weird.

The jock pages can be a huge tool as well!

  • In some instances when filling out paperwork for endorsements, they ask how many followers you have. This is a great opportunity to gain more endorsements.
  • I love sharing silly stories that amuse me or interest me on my page. Maybe it’s something that doesn’t pertain to what my show talked about on-air, but something that’s relevant to pop culture or what’s happening in the news.
  • Sharing my personal interests in artists and music is a plus as well! I love commentating on the Grammy’s via my jock page; something that shouldn’t happen on the station page.
  • Your program director LOVES when you blog! Share those blogs on your jock page!
  • Share where you’ll be for upcoming station events! This is a great opportunity to let your fans know where you’ll be so you can meet!
  • Give behind the scenes videos and pics. What goes on when the mic turns off.

Clearly, there are many advantages to having a separate jock page when it comes to social media. For one, it’s all about safety. You can share as much or as little as you’d like. Two, it’s beneficial to yourself AND the station!
