I’ve written before about determining the value of an on-air talent because that’s always been a tough thing for some stations to quantify. One thing that hasn’t traditionally been hard to quantify for owners is the value of their broadcast stations, until recently.
For the past couple of years one of my mantras has been, if I don’t value my time nobody will. Which is important because the main benefit I bring to my consulting clients is my years of experience, my diverse radio background and the time I can devote to solving their problems.

Although the headline “$1 Radio Station” gets our attention, how these deals are structured isn’t really anything new. For years radio groups have done LMAs where they pay little or nothing up front and take over the expenses to get an underperforming station off of another group’s books.
Like other large radio groups it appears that Audacy is moving toward regional market oversight leading to a new round of staff reductions. This comes a little over a year after Audacy's last round of layoffs. With first quarter coming to a close Audacy may not be the only radio group opting to layoff staff.
Welcome to the new management paradigm for radio:  “We love marketing… just not the budget line.” When cuts come, marketing is often first on the chopping block. Yet here’s the irony: when revenue tightens, marketing matters more — not less.
