Momentum 24 Highlights & Winners

I discovered a new niche format that is growing in popularity across the country, Spanish Contemporary Christian music.  Ministries have discovered a need to share the Gospel and Jesus’ message of salvation to the growing Spanish speaking population in Florida, Texas, California, Nevada, Colorado and much of the rest of the country.

Christian Music Broadcasters gathered for Momentum 24 in Orlando May 28-31.  Momentum is the annual conference that focuses on the Contemporary Christian Music format.

Christian music radio professionals attended sessions with distinguished speakers on leadership skills, programming, promotions, on-air, social & digital media, & revenue generation.

In Orlando, 35% of the population is now Hispanic and more than half speak Spanish at home. Similarly, 34% of Denver’s population is Hispanic with more than half speaking Spanish at home.   As the Spanish speaking population grows, radio ministries are filling a gap and sharing a message of hope and salvation.

The largest growth in Spanish Christian Music stations is in California, Oregon, Florida and Ohio. These states seem to have a larger Hispanic population due to the number of migrant farm workers in rural areas.

Mandy Young and Matthew West led a session on The Art of Interviewing.

Attendees were entertained throughout the conference with musical performances from Phil Wickham, Seph Schlueter, CeCe Winans, Danny Gokey, Anne Wilson, and more than 30 other CCM artists.

Performances were mingled in with education sessions every morning and afternoon.

All registered participants at Momentum who attended the worship service on Wednesday afternoon received a pass good for one of the Universal amusement parks.

As a young talent or Program Director, I found it difficult to walk up to strangers at conventions.  Over the years, I’ve gotten better and enjoy the challenge of meeting new people at seminars and conferences.  The organizers of Momentum assign a “mentor” to all first-time attendees.  This “mentor” starts emailing and texting with you a couple weeks before the conference and then makes sure you are being introduced to other veterans of Momentum, to ensure you have a positive experience.  This is an area that many other conferences should take notes on.

One session I found “reely” interesting was “Getting Reel About Short Form Video”.  Short form video continues to grow in popularity. Viewers seem to have a shorter attention span and need to get the message in under 2 minutes. Short compelling content wins with viewers, every time.

Finally, Momentum wrapped up with the CMB Awards Dinner Friday night to honor the stations of the year.
