Everyone who’s worked in radio for a few years knows phoners are almost non-existent. I remember when I was younger I would listen to the radio to call in to win. I’ve even set an alarm to win concert tickets when the station changed over at midnight! Whether it was a CD (yes, I know) or tickets to the year’s biggest music fest, it was all so exciting to me! I grew up watching my MOM try to win all the time! She was a babysitter so she had time while making lunch to listen to the radio and call. Now, I know her type as a “prize pig.” HAHAHAHA Lovingly, though.
When I got into radio I knew who those prize pigs were. They were annoying and called ALL. THE. TIME. We sure could use those these days though. Why? Even though they initially call in to win…we can keep them on the phone and ask their opinion on a topic we will be using for a bit later on and can that call in case we don’t get any calls for the future air time. THIS is just one way to get phoners!
We have to be extremely creative when conjuring up interesting conversations since call-ins are dying by the minute. It IS possible to create compelling content with fake phoners. Here’s how:
- Record EVERYTHING. As soon as that phone lights up, hit record. Whatever the initial reason the call is about, keep them on the line and ask about a topic coming up. This is the same idea with the winner we previously discussed.
- Utilize family and friends! Many times I’d text pals and had them call in to record. They love it. If you prep your show the night before, record them when you prep.
- Your local colleges usually have a theater department. Some of those students are trying to get into voice work. Find a contact for the instructor and ask if any of the students would be willing and available for call-ins every now and then.
- Make sure you’re doing the phoner topic the same time every day. People are easy to program. When we see it’s 7:15 and KISS FM usually does a call in to win, chances are their inner clock will already be alert at that time.
- Utilize your RDS. Usually, when it reads “Call NOW!” and has your phone number, people get excited for it.
These should get you started. Also, don’t be afraid to get into radio blogs and join chats for help. I know stations get pitted against each other, but it’s nice to brainstorm with other talents in the area to find out what works for them. They don’t have to be in your ratings area…maybe a few counties over. Phoners don’t have to be a way of the past.
