Don’t Chase Every Listener. Create More Superfans

Every successful brand has "superfans"—listeners who start the day with your morning show, stream you at work, follow you on social media, open your emails, attend your events, enter your contests, and tell their friends, "You've got to listen to this station."  Those listeners aren't just audience members. They're your marketing department. Here's how to create more of them.

The stations that win aren’t always the loudest; they’re the ones listeners refuse to leave.

Every Program Director wants bigger ratings. The temptation is to chase everyone.

The smartest stations do something different. They obsess over the people who already love them.

Every successful brand has “superfans”—listeners who start the day with your morning show, stream you at work, follow you on social media, open your emails, attend your events, enter your contests, and tell their friends, “You’ve got to listen to this station.”  Those listeners aren’t just audience members. They’re your marketing department.

Here’s how to create more of them.

Make every break matter. Every personality should give listeners a reason to stay through the next song, contest, feature, or benchmark. Loyalty is earned one great break at a time.

Own the workday. Whether listeners are in an office, working from home, or driving between appointments, becoming their default soundtrack for the workday remains one of radio’s biggest competitive advantages. If they choose you at 8:00 AM, don’t give them a reason to leave by 8:15.

Build your own audience—not someone else’s. Social media is wonderful…until the algorithm changes tomorrow. Your email club, text database, app users, and mobile alerts are audiences you actually own. Collect names everywhere—on-air, online, at events, and through contests.

Reward loyalty. Exclusive contests. Concert presales. VIP experiences. Birthday surprises—behind-the-scenes videos. Let your biggest fans feel like insiders, not just listeners.

Keep the conversation going. Radio is no longer a one-way medium. Talk with listeners on social media. Reply to emails. Share their photos. Celebrate local victories. A station that listens creates listeners who stay.

Be unforgettable. Great stations don’t simply play music or deliver information. They become part of people’s daily routine. When listeners say, “I can’t imagine my morning without them,” you’ve won.

Here’s the secret: Most stations spend enormous energy chasing new listeners while unintentionally ignoring the people who already love them. That’s like trying to make new friends while forgetting your best ones.  Never stop growing your audience—but never stop taking care of your biggest fans. Because the easiest listener to lose…is the one who thinks you’ll always be there.  Superfans are loyal because of Stationality.

Lund Challenge

At your next staff meeting, ask every air personality to name five listeners they know personally—by name. Then challenge each talent to add five new names over the next month through calls, social media, appearances, or community events. Great stations don’t just know their audience—they know their listeners.

Lund Lesson: Ratings don’t come from reaching the most people. They come from becoming the favorite station of the right people. Build superfans, and they’ll build your numbers.
