Ava Hart’s Coaching Tip: Don’t Shy Away From Critique

Don’t shy away from critique. You may find a nugget of wisdom that helps you. The criticism that stings the most is usually the criticism you need to hear the most. When someone says something that makes you defensive, that’s your signal to lean IN, not pull away.

American Doctor With Ebola Flown to Germany for Treatment

A U.S. physician working with a medical missionary organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo has tested positive for Ebola, according to the CDC. The doctor is being transported to Germany for specialized treatment. This case comes as health officials are sounding alarms about a broader outbreak in the region, where more than 250 suspected cases and roughly 80 deaths have been reported across Congo and neighboring Uganda. The virus spreads through contact with blood and bodily fluids, and while rare, it carries a high fatality rate. Authorities are working to contain the outbreak and monitor all contacts of confirmed cases.

The Situation

I’ve been grinding in finance at a major company for years, with my focus on a big promotion. My dream job has just opened. I’m qualified. I’m ready, and this is my big break. I know it. But I’m not the only qualified candidate. My main competition is my best friend, Simone, and she wants it, too. The problem is she doesn’t know that I want it, and I am willing to do anything to make it happen.

We’ve always had a friendly rivalry, but lately, I found out that Simone has been working with everyone in the workplace to try and influence this promotion. Now here’s the thing. I have dirt on her. I know she is in an affair with our boss. But nobody knows this except me, because I’m her best friend.

She knows I’m qualified for the job, but doesn’t know how much I want it. And I am sure she’s going to get the gig because she’s sleeping with the decision-maker.

So here I am. It’s my dream job. And I can get it by getting rid of my competition just by revealing the truth. But she’s also my best friend, and I would feel horrible if I got her fired. Plus, I could end up getting the boss fired, and then there’d be a new decision-maker I’d have to impress. What should I do?

The Tariff That Divided a Nation

John Quincy Adams signed what would become known as the Tariff of Abominations, a move that absolutely infuriated the South and kicked off one of the most serious constitutional crises in early American history. The law essentially protected Northern manufacturers by taxing imports, but Southern states saw it as an unfair tax on their way of life—and it sparked a showdown that threatened to tear the country apart over states’ rights.

The Beatles (Beatles)

The Beatles threw a swanky press bash at Brian Epstein’s London pad to introduce what would become one of the most influential albums ever recorded. As it turns out, the photographer hired that day was Linda Eastman—who’d later become Paul McCartney’s wife. Nothing quite says ‘this is going to be historic’ like accidentally hiring your bandmate’s future spouse to document the moment.
