Artist to Watch: Winter

The surrealism sound seems to be all the rage these days. More and more new artists are coming up under this genre. Winter is the latest musician to step into the 90s grunge era now known as shoegaze.

There’s not a lot out there about Samira Winter, as she keeps a pretty private life. We do know Samira was born in Brazil in 1991 and was brought up on MPB from her Brazilian mother while her American father introduced her to the American punk movement. Once you know that, you can hear where her influence came from. The ethereal tones with an almost romantic dark sound creates a very calming vibe.

While Samira grew up in Brazil, she moved to California so Samira could get into college. Sometime after the first move, she ventured out to Boston. By 2012 she formed her band, Winter. Soon after, they released an EP, Daydreaming.

Three years later, they released their debut album, Supreme Blue Dream. In order to promote the album, they set out on a two year tour through the US, Brazil, and Argentina. As if touring wasn’t keeping them busy enough, they had quite a few singles released. While promoting this album, they wrote constantly.

Not long after their first tour ended, they sent out their second studio album, Ethereality in 2018. Not wanting to sign to a major label, Samira and her sister decided to form their own label, Everything Blue Records. In 2022, they released their third album, second on their own label, What Kind of Blue Are You.

That’s where we are now.

As you listen, you can hear a bit of Radiohead mixed with Mazzy Star and Slowdive.
