When I first heard a song of his on Tik Tok I thought, “ooh that’s catchy!” I started watching more of his videos on the app and found he has a really fun energy. The music reminds me of my early aughts club days. They make you want to get up and move, and that’s exactly what we need right now. I dug a bit deeper and I did not expect to find the background of Magnus Ferrell.
The first song I heard on Tik Tok was “Don’t Talk to me Like That.” The video is just of him looking up at a camera singing his song. Very low budget, so I assumed he’s an up-and-comer looking for a break. I played more of his songs off YouTube… “Life or Death,” “I Can’t Stop Thinking About It,” and then “Slow Down” which I recognized from Will Ferrell’s latest movie, “You’re Cordially Invited.” That’s when I put two and two together.
It seems Magnus is Will’s son, but this isn’t Magnus’ first time in the spotlight. According to People.com Magnus formed a band in 2022 with a pal, and sometimes his dad would join in. They had their first live gig that year and Will jumped up on stage and played the cowbell, ala SNL.
Magnus has also had little spots in a couple of his dad’s movies: “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues,” and “If You Build the House They Will Come.”
Currently a sophomore at the University of Southern California, he’s actually studying acting and not solely concentrating on music. However, music has been in his life since an early age. At 9 years old, Magnus learned to play the piano. Around 13, he got into jazz and music theory. That same year, he took a step into writing his own music. While he started music as a hobby, he realized there was more to it for him. This is what made him want to get into USC, even if his major is acting, he’s still very much into his music.
Right now, he’s concentrating on releasing little bits at a time. Magnus does have an ep out called “Hasn’t Even Started” with 6 tracks, including “Don’t Talk to Me Like That.”
I expect to hear a lot more from him coming up, especially with the success of his most recent song, “Slow Down.”
