Artist to Watch: FLO

I love that the 90s are coming back! First, it was all alternative bands coming out with the retro sound. But now the late 90s R&B vibe is making a resurgence. This time, it’s an all -female British girl group bringing the nostalgia.

FLO is made up of three very talented women hailing from Europe. Stella was born in Kingston, England and attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School. There, she met Renee Downer who would become a bandmate. The third member, Jorja, was born in Eastern Germany and moved to Hertfordshire. She grew up listening to the R&B her mom listened to. All three have different musical backgrounds as Sylvia was raised on African music from when she lived in Africa for a few years, and Renee listened to house and church gospel.

Stella and Renee ended up finding Jorja on Instagram after seeing the videos of her singing. They formed the group in 2019. FLO spent two years just writing music, and then finally recorded their debut, “Cardboard Box” in early 2022. Signing to Island Records helped the song gain momentum. Social media had a hand in it blowing up, even earning the praises from artists like SZA and Victoria Monet.

Their second song, “Immature,” came out in July of the same year. 2022 turned out to be a huge year for FLO as they made their tv debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in October. December they became the first female group to top the BBC Sound of… and win the Brit Rising Star.

Trying to keep the steam going from 2022 into 2023, Flo was interviewed by Elton John on Rocket Hour. Later that year they performed at various music festivals. In March, “Fly Girl” was released, from Missy Elliot featuring FLO. Finally, they hit the road on their first sold out tour in Nort America and Europe.

FLO was nominated for three awards at the BET Awards, including Best Group. Not long after their first nominations as a group, they were nominated for Push Performance of the Year at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.

Early 2024 saw the group release another single, “Walk Like This” from their studio album, Access All Areas. FLO performed at Coachella 2024, the Governors Ball, and opened for Kehlani’s tour, wrapping up 2024.

Below is their latest single, featuring GloRilla.
