Don’t Just Sound Good This Summer—Create an Experience

Think about your favorite vacation.  You probably don't remember every meal or every hotel room. You remember the feeling.  The same is true of radio. Listeners rarely remember every song you played. They remember whether your station made them smile, laugh, feel connected, or made a long drive seem shorter.

Great stations don’t simply play music. They create a feeling listeners want to come back to every day.

Think about your favorite vacation.  You probably don’t remember every meal or every hotel room. You remember the feeling.  The same is true of radio.

Listeners rarely remember every song you played. They remember whether your station made them smile, laugh, feel connected, or made a long drive seem shorter.  That’s what we’ve long called Stationality®, the unique atmosphere that makes listeners say, “This station just feels different.”  So how do you create that magic this summer?

Own your personality

Anyone can play hit songs. The stations listeners remember have a distinct attitude, sense of humor, and personality. If another station could steal your imaging by changing only the call letters, it’s probably too generic.

Create experiences—not just contests

Sure, everyone gives away cash. But can you create a memory? A backstage experience. A VIP boat cruise. A family adventure. A “Summer Survival Kit.” The prize ends. The story lives on.

Be where summer happens

Listeners are at concerts, festivals, ballparks, farmers markets, food truck nights, lakes, beaches, community celebrations, and neighborhood events. If your audience is there, your station should be there too.

Turn listeners into stars

Share their vacation photos. Feature backyard barbecue pictures. Spotlight local road trips. Celebrate community heroes. Great stations don’t just talk to listeners—they put listeners in the show.

Sound like summer

Fresh imaging, seasonal music beds, outdoor ambiance, listener calls, live broadcasts, and enthusiastic personalities all help create a station that feels alive. Energy is contagious.

Think beyond the airwaves

Your website, app, social media, podcasts, and videos should all reinforce the same personality. Listeners don’t experience your station one platform at a time—they experience one brand.

Here’s the secret: Atmosphere isn’t created by a single great promotion.  It’s created by hundreds of little moments that make listeners feel good every time they encounter your station.  Because people may forget what you said, but they’ll never forget how your station made them feel.  Promotions express your Stationality in the community.

Lund Challenge

Walk through your station this week and ask one simple question about every contest, promo, liner, social post, and appearance: “Could only our station do this?” If the answer is no, add more personality, local flavor, or creativity until the answer becomes yes.

Lund Lesson: Listeners don’t become loyal to stations because of what they hear. They become loyal because of how the station makes them feel.
