10 Trademarks of Winning Radio Stations

Successful radio stations rarely have a secret formula locked in the PD's desk.  They simply execute the fundamentals better, more consistently and more relentlessly than the competition.  As you prepare for Fall, listen to your station for these ten trademarks of a winner.

The Basics Aren’t Boring When They’re Winning

Successful radio stations rarely have a secret formula locked in the PD’s desk.  They simply execute the fundamentals better, more consistently and more relentlessly than the competition.  As you prepare for Fall, listen to your station for these ten trademarks of a winner:

  1. Play the Right Music.

The station plays the best-researched, most familiar and best-liked music for its target audience. Not the PD’s favorites. Not songs the record label loves. Not “forgotten gems” somebody discovered at 2 AM. Listener favorites win.

  1. Own Mornings.

The morning show is entertaining, topical, local, and memorable—the show people talk about after they leave the car. Great morning shows don’t merely fill four hours. They create reasons to listen longer…and tomorrow.

  1. Be Everywhere.

Winning stations show up where listeners live, work and play—concerts, community events, festivals, sports and local causes. Aggressively promote at-work listening, too. Visibility creates familiarity; familiarity creates listening.

  1. Market Like You Mean It.

Successful stations don’t promote only when the ratings are disappointing. Marketing is creative, strategic and ongoing—on-air, outdoor, digital, social and in the community. Promote like your livelihood depends on it.  Because it does.

  1. Execute the Format Flawlessly.

Every personality understands the fundamentals: concise breaks, listener-focused content, localism, teases, station branding, and forward momentum. Different personalities should have different styles, but the station always sounds like the same station.

  1. Don’t Keep Your Name a Secret.

Listeners should never have to wonder what station they’re hearing. Reinforce the station name, dial position, and primary programming benefit frequently.  You paid for the frequency. Mention it.

  1. Sound Like You’re Having Fun.

Enthusiasm is contagious. Winning stations have energy, momentum and personalities who sound like they actually enjoy being there.  If the talent sounds bored, imagine how the listener feels.

  1. Manufacture Another Quarter-Hour.

Promote ahead constantly. Tease upcoming songs, benchmarks, contests and content with specific appointment times. Every break should give listeners a reason not to leave—and a reason to return.

  1. Make Promotions Sound BIG.

Your major Fall contest is impossible to miss. Promote it frequently with fresh promos, liners, digital support and—most importantly—excited winners.  Nothing sells winning quite like somebody actually winning.

  1. Sound Like a Winner.

Great imaging. Strong personalities. Focused music. Local relevance. Smart marketing. Consistent execution.  Winning stations have a confidence you can hear.
