Artist to Watch: CHINCHILLA

Once again, the first time I heard this song was on Tik Tok. The second I heard a sweet voice go from “say that again, I didn’t quite hear ya. Messed with the wrong b*&ch in the wrong era,” and then explode into the chorus, I thought WOAH, ok! This girl has something to say.

Daisy Bertenshaw, aka CHINCHILLA, is a London-based artist doing it all on her own. There isn’t a lot of info on her early years, but we do know a lot about this “feisty pop” singer the past few years. Her songwriting and vocal abilities caught the eye of Sony, but they, eventually, parted ways when she realized she wanted total creative control over her own music. Her first release in 2019 was a catalyst to performing in the UK’s most popular festivals. From there, Chinchilla made a name for herself across the pond. Thanks to social media and her devotion to her message, we’re seeing a lot more of this female powerhouse.

When “Little Girl Gone” was first released on Tik Tok, Daisy said she couldn’t believe how massive the following became. According to her interview in Rolling Stone, “Little Girl Gone was the song that changed my life.” With over a million videos created using that specific song, it’s safe to say she’s blown up on social media. Her follow up, ‘Cut You Off’ is just as empowering as her debut. All Chinchilla’s heavy pop tunes have the same theme of empowerment, which you can sense in every lyric of every catchy anthem.

As for the name? In a recent interview with whynow.co.uk, she explained, “ I was choosing between names. I always used to wear big faux fur coats, and I have my nails that are usually long. I loved the sound of the word, and always came back to it. I was picking between a couple names in an Uber, because I felt I really needed to pick one at that stage. A Nicki Minaj song was playing; I just wanted a sign and then she said ‘Chinchilla’ in the song [‘Letcha Go’], as I was thinking it.”
