Loose And Tight
Prepare tight. Perform loose. The greater the preparation, the more relaxed the performance.
Jazz musicians practice scales for hours so they can improvise freely on stage. Same with radio. The more you prepare, the more freedom you have to be spontaneous. Tight prep gives you the confidence to go loose. No prep? You’re not being spontaneous. You’re being sloppy.
Besides the coaching tip of the day my daily prep also includes headlines making the news that day, essential pop culture updates, a topic of the day and a situation to use as phone topics, an impossible question, ten trivia questions, three hot takes, celebrity birthdays, horoscopes, today in history and today in music history. Topic of the Day
Topic 1
What words or phrases should never be used during an argument with a partner?
Impossible Question
What is the #1 name men would name their male dog: jack.
The Situation
I work for a fast-food company. I don’t cook the food. I serve it, mostly at the drive-through window.
I’ve been there for two years and like it okay. But I just found out that the company has a new policy and our manager is being a stickler on the details.
The new dress code is that pierced earrings are allowed, but no nose rings. The reason is that some customers have complained about nose rings—not mine, but in other places. So they changed their policy.
My nose ring is very small and in good taste. It’s never been a problem. I asked if he can make an exception, and he said no.
I’m thinking about quitting over it. There are a ton of jobs out there and who needs it, right? On the other hand, it’s not that big of a deal to just remove it during my shift. Should I make a big deal over it? And would I be making a mistake if I quit over something like this?

Would You Rather

First Black Congressman Elected, Never Seated
John Willis Menard of Louisiana won a House seat this month in 1868, making him the first African American elected to Congress. But an electoral challenge kept him from ever taking the oath — the House debated the contested result and ultimately left the seat unfilled. What I find remarkable is that Menard did get to speak on the floor in his own defense, becoming the first Black man to address the House. The seat was the prize; the voice, at least, he got to use.

Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley went on maneuvers for the first time with the US Army’s 32nd Tank Regiment near the German-Czech border. The manoeuvres involved patrolling and closing the border near Czechoslovakia during the Cold War. This was also when Presley experienced his first exposure to prescribed amphetamines (Dexedrine) given by a sergeant to help soldiers stay awake on guard duty.
