If your station’s logo disappeared tomorrow, would listeners still know it was you?
That’s the real test of Stationality®. Over the years, I’ve heard thousands of radio stations around the world. Many had similar music. Similar contests. Similar jingles. Similar voices. Some even used the same syndicated features. Yet a handful of stations sounded unmistakably unique. You knew it was them within seconds. That’s not luck.
That’s Stationality®
Years ago I coined the expression “Stationality” to describe the personality of a radio station—the feeling listeners get every time they tune in. It’s the sum of everything they experience: the music, the imaging, the morning show, the contests, the website, the social media, the community involvement, and even the attitude of the people behind the microphones. It’s why some stations become lifelong companions while others become background noise.
Think about legendary stations like WABC New York, KHJ in Boss Angeles, CKLW Detroit/Windsor, WLS Chicago, KFRC San Francisco, or K-EARTH 101 in LA. They weren’t simply playing hit songs. They created excitement. Their personalities were larger than life. Their promotions became local legends. Their jingles made you turn up the radio rather than change the station.
Stationality® Spotlight
WLS Chicago wasn’t just a Top 40 station—it was an event. The jingles, personalities, contests, promotions, and larger-than-life presentation combined to create an atmosphere competitors spent years trying to copy. Great stations don’t simply entertain. They become part of the community’s identity.
Those little case studies would bring the concepts to life and remind readers that Stationality® isn’t theory—it’s something they’ve heard, admired, and can build themselves.
People didn’t just listen to those stations. They belonged to them. Today, the challenge is even greater. You’re no longer competing with the station across town. You’re competing with Spotify, Apple Music, SiriusXM, podcasts, YouTube, TikTok, Netflix, and about 7,000 other ways to avoid doing actual work.
So how do you build Stationality®?
- Sound like your city. Local stories, landmarks, traditions, sports, weather, and community pride should be woven naturally into every day.
- Develop memorable personalities. Don’t hire announcers. Develop companions. Great personalities become part of listeners’ routines.
- Own something. A benchmark feature. A promotion. A concert. A charity event. A signature contest. Give listeners something they immediately associate with your station.
- Create moments worth repeating. The best breaks become office conversations. The best promotions become community memories.
- Think beyond the airwaves. Your website, app, podcasts, videos, emails, and social media should all sound and feel like the same station.
- Be relentlessly consistent. Every promo, liner, contest, remote, and social post should reinforce who you are. Great brands don’t wander—they repeat.
Here’s a simple exercise. Imagine your station is a person. Would listeners describe it as fun? Friendly? Irreverent? Intelligent? Energetic? Local? Adventurous? Or would they pause…and ask, “Which station are we talking about?” If your audience can’t describe your station’s personality, your station probably doesn’t have one.
The good news? Stationality® isn’t built by one brilliant promotion or one superstar morning show. It’s built every day, one song, one break, one promo, one listener interaction, and one community event at a time. Because stations don’t become legendary by sounding like everyone else, they become legendary by becoming unforgettable.
Lund Challenge
Ask ten employees—from every department—to describe your station using just three words. Then ask ten loyal listeners the same question. If the answers don’t match, your brand isn’t as clear as you think. Spend the next month making those three words unmistakable in everything your station does.
Lund Lesson
Formats attract listeners. Stationality® keeps them. When people fall in love with your station’s personality—not just its playlist—you’ve created something competitors can never duplicate.
