Ava Hart’s Coaching Tip: The Winning Formula

Mechanics are like defense in sports. They keep you from falling behind. But offense wins games by creating exciting moments. Pay attention to the basics, but know what wins. Yes, you need good mechanics. Clean audio. Tight transitions. Solid structure. But nobody tunes in for your mechanics. They tune in for the MOMENTS.

Guatemala’s Fuego Volcano Erupts, Villages Evacuated

Guatemala’s Fuego volcano is putting on a powerful and dangerous display, forcing residents in at least two nearby villages to evacuate. The volcano, one of the most active in the Western Hemisphere, began spewing lava and ash on Monday. By early Tuesday, rivers of gas, ash, and rock, known as pyroclastic flows, were still surging down its southeastern slope. The country’s disaster management agency has raised the alert level to orange nationwide, the second-highest warning. This is a developing situation, and officials are keeping a close watch on the volcano’s activity.

Pop Culture Essential Updates

Ariana Grande Sets the Record Straight on Her Career Break

Ariana Grande is clearing up the chatter around her upcoming hiatus. The singer told a Chicago crowd that stepping back from the spotlight after her Eternal Sunshine Tour wraps isn’t something she decided on a whim. She also noted that stories not coming directly from her can sometimes get blown out of proportion. It sounds like this break is a well-thought-out move on her terms.

What is something you wish your partner was worse at so you’d feel superior?

Impossible Question

This activity, usually done at home, burns about 250 calories an hour: mopping the floor.

The Situation

I told a woman the meaning of her daughter’s name, and now everyone is upset with me.

Three weeks ago, I went to visit my friend Alice, and during my visit, Mary (a friend of Alice) stopped by.

Mary and I started a conversation, and during that conversation, she asked about my cultural/ethnic background.

I explained that I am Ethiopian. We talked about how she spent time in Ethiopia when she was younger and how much of an impact the people, culture, and traditions had on her.

She then told me that the locals named her Yema Yimechi because that means “beloved one” and that she loved the name so much that she has chosen that name for her daughter.

I asked her if she was serious. She told me she was, that her name was Yema Yimechi. But here’s the problem: that name does not mean “beloved one” in my language. It actually means uncomfortable/inconvenient/imbecile, depending on how you use it.

So I told her the true meaning. Mary is now very angry with me and refuses to accept that she named her child an unpleasant/offensive name.

Mary left angry, and Alice is now upset with me for hurting Mary’s feelings, as she feels I shouldn’t have told her.

I do feel bad, as she seemed genuinely hurt, but I don’t know what to do or how to fix hurting Mary’s feelings.

I just got back from a Civil War reenactment, my first big event in years. I spent over $200 on gas and food, and had to drive for over 10 hours both ways. When I finally got there, I realized I had left my uniform at home.

Napoleon’s First Big Win at Castiglione

Before he was the guy with the hand-in-coat pose, Napoleon was just a general trying to make a name for himself. At the Battle of Castiglione, he outmaneuvered the Austrians in Italy, proving he was a tactical genius. It was one of those early victories that made Europe realize this Corsican upstart was going to be a problem… for them.

American Bandstand hits the airwaves

American Bandstand

On this day in ’57, American Bandstand made its national TV debut with Dick Clark at the helm—a gig he’d keep for over three decades. From ABBA to Pink Floyd, every band that mattered seemed to stop by at some point. It was basically the original ‘Saturday morning cartoons’ for music lovers, minus the sugar high.
