Be Objective
Be positive, but be objective and honest. If something isn’t working, get rid of it and find something that does.
Stop defending bits that don’t work just because you like them. If the audience doesn’t care, kill it. No matter how much time you invested. No matter how clever you think it is. If it’s not landing, move on. Being precious about bad content is career suicide.

Impossible Question
7:14pm is the most common time for this: to open a bottle of wine.
The Situation
I’m about to get a big job offer that could be a life-changer for me. But now I’m scared. I’m perfect for this job and nailed the interview. The company has checked my background and said to expect an offer this week.
Then the HR director called and said they wanted a few more references, just for the files. I had already provided five, and they called three of them. She wanted three more.
I gave them two good ones, but couldn’t think of another, so I put down a friend from an old job I worked at. He wasn’t a boss, but a peer. I didn’t think anything of it, because it seemed like they just wanted it for the record.
Yesterday, he texted me and wanted to know why this company was calling for a reference on me. I called and explained and asked him to cover. But he won’t do it. Said he could get in trouble for it, and was going to be honest. And THEN he said, “And if I talk to them, my reference isn’t going to help you that much. I always thought you were over-rated.”.
Now I’m freaking out. This could ruin everything. What should I do?
